«Does the freedom of expression that is the basis of choice, and that is supposed to be found in photojournalism, correspond to reality? The answer is that perhaps there are exceptions, but in the vast majority of cases freedom of expression, especially after the break-in period, becomes a very vague chimera. I am not talking about photographic technique and all the freedoms associated with technique, but the freedom of interpretation that should be within each photograph.
Photographs given to a newspaper are cut, turned around, manipulated, captioned in a sometimes indecent manner for the use and consumption of a final product that perhaps succeeds in satisfying certain interests, but very hardly these interests are also those of the photographer. So where is the freedom to express oneself if sometimes there is not even the freedom to document honestly?»
